Animal Welfare Program

Bhairava Initiative – Working with Blue Cross Animal Aid Society

The overpopulation of street dogs and resulting increase in human deaths by rabies has caused corporations to adopt a ‘catch and kill' policy leading to mass killings of street dogs each year.  Yet this severe and tragic ‘solution' has proved to have no affect on rabies cases.

Tripura Foundation helps fund Blue Cross and Animal Aid Society in both northern and southern India to implement widespread animal birth control programs.  Dogs are spayed or neutered, tagged as safe to civilians, and then released back into the pick-up neighborhood.  Human deaths from rabies have decreased 95% in Chennai since 1997 when the program became official. These aid organizations also educate the public on animal care, administer adoption programs, run retirement shelters for old beast of burden animals, and advocate animal rights.

Alliance with Leading Animal Welfare Organization in India

It's a simple but heart felt plan:  start a rescue and care facility for mistreated, abandoned and uncared for animals of all kinds in Chennai, India.   We see cats, dogs, oxen, cows, calfs, donkeys, birds, etc. in need of feeding, shelter, vaccination, as well as urgent care for near starvation, wounds and diseases.  To begin, our facility will spay and neuter animals to help curb the current overpopulation of street animals.  In addition, limited emergency care, rescue and housing of mistreated, sick, and vulnerable animals will also be undertaken.

Practices to address the sacred nature of the animals will be incorporated into the specialized, managed care that is to be administered.  In addition, the facility will be open to the public and other animal welfare organizations so that the facility itself serves to educate by example on the care, treatment and upliftment of animals.

Our current first step is to find a parcel of land suitable to house our care facility.  Our hope is that several acres will be donated to us for the facility, but we may need to lease or purchase the land outright.  We will send out updates on this initiative as new developments become available!
