Helping the Destitute Mentally ill of Chennai

The Banyan Home for Mentally Ill Destitute
The Banyan is a very unique social welfare agency in Chennai. Started by two young ladies in their college years, the Banyan shelters and cares for mentally ill, destitute women living on the streets of Chennai. The women often have wandered into Chennai from far-off locations, and suffer physical, sexual and emotional abuse in their wanderings. The Banyan gives the women a decent place to live, clothes and food. Most importantly, the Banyan focuses on progressive rehabilitation of the women through psychiatric medicines and therapeutic activities. Sometimes they even carry out investigative work to reunite the woman with family members in distant places

Through our donations, we supported the daily medical expenses of 200 of these women.

We are happy to announce that The Banyan House has now secured the regular donations from the private sector and are doing very well.

Achievements:
- Has reached out to over 1,100 women
- Rehabilitated 50% or over 550 women
- Provides lifelong medical support and follow-up to 300 rehabilitated women
- Lobbies for the rights of the mentally ill

A Place for Rehabilitation
"The stories of these women are stories of faith, determination and incredible courage; to be able to return back to a society that once had no place for them. Each woman who finds her way home is an example as to how much can be changed through hope."
