Girls Town at Chennai
This project was  launched June, 2005 by The Tripura Foundation

Objective
The objective of the project is to further develop and explore the most important variables in creating a new destiny for a child from the poorest and most chaotic circumstances. We first demonstrated the success of our techniques with our Boystown program. Now we seek to work with girls, as girls in India face a staggering array of cultural and socio-economic obstacles to their development and future opportunities in life.

Selection
Through our known sources, we selected 50 girls who are truly needy and without this opportunity, they would have no means to come up in life. The girls come from various small villages surrounding Chennai, living in poverty-ridden conditions. Most of the girls are malnutritioned, appearing years younger than their actual age.

Overcoming the Demographic Poverty Trap

"Girls' education would allow women to more easily join the labor force, increasing their earning power and the "cost" of staying home to bear children.  Education, law, and social action can empower women to more easily make fertility choices (instead of having those choices made solely by husbands or others in the family)."
