Disaster Relief - Tsunami Relief Efforts

Focused Relief with the Most Impact
Before we began the process of investigating the Tsunami relief efforts of the Tamil Nadu government and many other non-governmental organizations, The Tripura Foundation had two clear goals;

  1. Find out who are the forgotten people, who are the affected people who need the most help and are either receiving no aid at all, or have only received very minimal aid.
  2. Once these people are identified investigate their situation and find a solution that has a long-term impact on their lives.

With the help of The Sevabharathi Organization we found our answers after one week of investigation at the worst-affected area in Tamil Nadu; the district of Nagapattinam. The greatest death toll was in Nagapattinam with at least a 1,000 houses destroyed and countless fisherman boats were damaged or completely ruined. The devastation to the fishermen community was dramatic, and aid poured in to relieve their plight. However, there were other small communities that experienced devastation as well. These people were already living below poverty before the Tsunami, as compared to the very abundant monthly incomes of most fishermen.

Living in Relief Camps
Many families lived below the poverty line before the Tsunami. Many (nearly 60,000) still live in relief camps. Much of our case load came from these families.
