Boys Town at Chennai
The first formal charity project launched by Tripura Foundation June 2000.

Objective
The objective of the project is to discover the important variables in helping impoverished children from sub-human conditions to realize their potential and grow to be happy, productive adults.

Partnership with Rotary Club of Madras and "Save the Children"
We partnered with the Rotary Club of Madras, who had constructed a large, attractive building with a grant from "Save the Children"- building on land donated by the government of Tamil Nadu. With sponsorship from "Save the Children" as well as individual club members, 30 boys were living in the facility that has a capacity for 80 boys. We developed an agreement with the Rotary Club of Madras to sponsor an additional 30 12-year-old boys, starting from the school year May 2000-May 2001. We also agreed to provide alternative educational programming and tutoring for all 60 boys beyond their traditional schoolwork We are in the process of sponsoring 20 more boys from Tsunami-affected families for the school year May 2005-2006
.

Selection
We selected boys who are truly needy and without this opportunity, they would have no means to come up in life. The boys come from various small villages surrounding Chennai, living in poverty-ridden conditions. Most of the boys were malnutritioned, appearing years younger than their actual age. Home Life for the Boys.

The profiles of the boys' families are grim. The average family income to support 5-8 members is Rs. 1500, which is $30 USD per month. Most of their fathers are daily laborers in construction and work on a haphazard basis. Many of the fathers are alcoholics, and some of the boys have fathers who have deserted the family for a second wife. The mothers are usually housewives.

Quality education is a prerequisite for sustainable development

"Education is the primary agent of transformation towards sustainable development, increasing people’s capacities to transform their visions for society into reality. Education not only provides scientific and technical skills, it also provides the motivation, justification, and social support for pursuing and applying them. The international community now strongly believes that we need to foster — through education — the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a sustainable future."
